7 Ways to Take a Bite Out of the Intermediate Language Level 7 Ways to Take a Bite Out of the Intermediate Language Level The sweet center of language progress isnt always all its cracked up to be.Thats not to say theres anything wrong with the middle.Some might even say its the best part of a smore or a sandwich cookie.But if youre stuck at the center level of language proficiency, chances are youre eager to get out of that messy middle once and for all.Regardless of what language youre studying, as an intermediate learner, there are certain challenges youll face.Whether youre an intermediate Spanish learner or an intermediate German learner, the road ahead probably looks quite similarand sometimes quite daunting.But this means that once youve wised up to what intermediate language proficiency is like, what setbacks youll face and what youll need to do to get out of it, you can wiggle your way out of the middle and on towards advanced study.But before we look at ways to do that, lets see how you can identify whether youre an intermediate learner in the first place. What Is Intermediate Level Languag e Proficiency?If youre unsure of what proficiency level youre at, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines can help you determine it.You can also get a good general idea of whether youre at an intermediate level by considering some basic questions.Can you speak and write on familiar topics? For instance, if you were asked to write a paragraph on your favorite hobby in your target language, could you do it? If not, you might not be at an intermediate level yet. On the other hand, if you can speak on the spot about much more complex topics, you may already be advanced.Can you put together previous learning to create new meaning? If you rely on specific words and phrases youve memorized, youre probably still a beginning learner. However, if you can put together words to create new meaning, youve probably reached the intermediate level.Can you put together sentences? If so (and if applicable to the language youre learning), what verb tense do you use? There are some words that youll want to jot down, look up and study.Do you frequently encount er the same word that youve not yet learned? If so, thats a good cue to jot down the word and look it up. Does the meaning of one particular word seem critical to the overall meaning of a sentence? Thats another good word to jot down. If you focus on the most frequently used and/or critical words, youll be learning some particularly valuable vocabulary, and that will tend to be the vocabulary that helps you move forward the fastest.7. How to Optimize Slow Work Days Image via pixabay.com Always have study materials on you While you may dread having a shift before a big test when you need the time for studying, you can still put in some studying time if you bring along materials to study with. Always go digital if you can so you have fewer papers to remember to bring and a lighter load. Look at pictures of your study guides or notes on Google Docs. Study concepts on Quizlet, which has a convenient mobile app for on-the-go studying. If you are planning on using your phone, tablet, or laptop, remember to comply with your jobs rules when it comes to using technology during your shift, regardless of how slow it is. If your job prohibits the use of technology during your shift, you can always bring along hard copies of things you need to study class readings, course notes, flashcards, etc. One of the biggest mistakes students can make is mistaking possible studying time as waste of time moments, such as slow days at work, breaks between classes, and commutes to and from school or work. Plan ahead Having a part-time job as a full-time college student encouraged me to effectively plan out my time there werent enough hours in the day and I always felt like I was falling behind in class or socially. Instead of continuing to struggle with balancing work, school, and my social life, I started to plan out my days, weeks, and months. I always carry my planner on me, allowing me to write any new plans that come up or things I need to buy from the store as I remember them. I often dont have a set time where I sit down and plan out my week, but I often do it when I have downtime at work. If you dont like the idea of carrying around a physical planner, you can always use the calendar app on your phone or the mobile app for Google Calendar to have your schedule on all of your devices, as long as you can access your account. Planning ahead does not have to be limited to figuring out what to do the next day make shopping lists or plan out an essay/assignment you need to do. Planning out things like essays saves you the time you would need to do it at home, helping you start it right away when you actually need to. Get ahead in work, but only when needed If its slow at work and you have already finished the tasks you need to do for the hour or shift, you may think that there is nothing to do at all. However, you can always get ahead to make it easier for you and/or your coworkers later on. If there are tasks for people later on in the day that you could complete when its slow, get them done early to save yourself the trouble later when there is the possibility that it could be busier than it is at the moment. Restock anything that needs it. Make copies for later. Draft and proofread any emails you need to send out later. When you are getting ahead in work, make sure it will be beneficial if its done earlier. If something needs to be done at a set time (changing something out every other hour, closing a machine down, sending out a reminder email), there is no use in getting ahead when it will have to be done again at a later time or if it will mess with another task later on. Take a breather It may sound weird to try to relax at work, but I often look forward to work when I feel overwhelmed with school. Its a chance to have a reason to step away from anything academic and still be somewhat productive as Im earning money while doing so. Work helps take your mind off of school and gives you some room to breathe, especially on a slow day. If you cant hang out with your friends because you are all busy with school or your own jobs, you can at least find comfort in talking to your coworkers who you hopefully have a friendly relationship with. If it really is a slow day at work, take advantage of the slow pace and relax while you can, knowing that once you get home you need to get back to studying.

The subsequent 10-metre tsunami devastated the northeastern coast of the nation, which continues to lie in ruins. The hardest hit prefectures include, Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate. This is the story from one Teach Away teacher living in a coastal town in Iwate when the quake and tsunami struck.Joseph Hinds, a 27 year-old Canadian, departed for his Assistant Language Teacher post in northern Japan in the Fall of 2010. Before the quake of March 11th, Joseph had experienced multiple minor tremors, as is the norm, in fault-line teetering Japan. He had become accustomed to the short stoppages in the workday before returning to the daily routine of teaching English in Japanese public schools. However, the March 11th earthquake was different. âThere were alarms and announcements being played throughout the city, but I didnât understand them. Shortly after the earthquake, electricity, water, and gas had been shut off.â Usually, Japanâs structural stability can withstand shakes up to around 6.0 without this occurring. âI saw many people walking on the streets going in the same direction. I suspected they were evacuating,â something only practiced with the severest of disasters.âA random Japanese lady driving past me stopped to see if I was okay. The woman had just seen on the news that tsunami waters were flooding the city, though my area remained largely unaffected. I didnât understand the rest of the conversation in Japanese. Cell phone lines were busy and I couldnât get through to anyone.â One remark from the woman that Joseph could understand:âI have never experienced an earthquake like this in my entire life!âJoseph decided to bunker down in his semi-safe home for the night. The next morning, he drove to a Japanese friendâs printing company for more information. Other f oreign teachers had also congregated on this local print shop, quickly turning it into a refuge from the disaster. Their only access to the outside world was a computer powered by a car battery, allowing them to access the internet and inform family of their conditions. âWe all spent the night at the print shop office, sharing what little food and water we had.âThe next day at the grocery stores, âpeople were only buying a little more than usual and seemed to be mindful if there would be enough left of other people. Everyone inside the store was calm and collected.âAs Joseph left the store, another car pulled over to offer assistance. A teacher from where he works offered him a ride to an evacuation area, making Joseph âfeel safe and well taken care of by the Japanese people.â Although dealing with the ordeals of the earthquake, tsunami, and impending nuclear scenario, Japanâs solidarity truly shines in these times.âThe earthquake and tsunami reveal the respectful an d polite culture instilled in Japanese people.âJoseph is now in a safe area, and is eager to help Japan recover from this disaster in whatever way he can.
